Domestic violence and the potential effects on brain development

Last week Dr Susan Pulman was invited to speak at a forum for the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Program. Dr Pulman discussed the effect of family violence on the developing brain, particularly in women. She discussed the possible changes to the structure of the brain in young children as it relates to exposure to domestic violence and how this can lead to ongoing difficulties in self-regulation and mental health. Dr Pulman highlighted the need for professionals dealing with those involved in domestic violence to recognise the possibility of potential brain injury in this group from repeated assault from partners.
